How to use varistor in E-meters and power meters

2025-01-17

The varistors of UF capacitors are mainly used in household appliances and industrial fields, such as televisions, electricity meters, AC and DC power systems, photovoltaics, and other inverters.

How to use varistor in E-meters and power meters

Why is the selection of varistors important

The accurate, safe, and stable operation of smart energy meters is related to the principles of fair and just market transactions. The key component of an electric energy meter, the varistor, plays an important role in handling overvoltage and absorbing induced lightning current. Varistors are resistance devices whose resistance values exhibit nonlinear changes with external voltage. When the terminal voltage is below a certain threshold, the varistor approximates an open circuit state in the circuit; When exceeding this threshold, the resistance value increases sharply with the increase of terminal voltage. The requirements for varistors in different operating conditions and wiring environments of electric energy meters are different. If the varistor is selected improperly, it not only cannot provide protection, but also affects the use of other components in the electric energy meter, and may even cause varistor component explosion accidents. Therefore, the selection of varistors is very necessary.

UF capacitos has three series of varistors

VAR Series Zinc Oxide Varistor STANDARD series

VAR Series Zinc Oxide Varistor HIGH ENERGY series

VAR Series Zinc Oxide Varistor 6KV3KA series

The 6KV3KA series is specifically designed for electric energy meters and is widely used in single-phase and three-phase electric energy meters

In order to prevent the high-energy surge generated by high voltage from causing the meter to burn out and unable to measure, resulting in huge losses, electronic energy meters now commonly use parallel varistors on the power input side to absorb and clamp the surge energy. Due to the enormous surge energy, the surge current during 4KV testing reaches over 1.3KA, and the vast majority of the energy generated is absorbed by the pressure-sensitive device. When the surge voltage reaches 6KV, the surge current reaches 2.3KA or more. However, varistors have a limit on the number of times they can absorb huge surge energy. Repeatedly absorbing surge energy can cause the zinc oxide particles of varistors to gradually fail, ultimately leading to varistor explosions and burning of PCB circuit boards and backend devices.

The resistance capacitance voltage reduction circuit that prevents 4-6KV surges solves the problem of varistors exploding and burning back-end devices under high voltage surge impact due to their limited absorption times and large absorption capacity under repeated surge conditions in traditional energy meter circuits through surge protection. It can be widely used in single-phase and three-phase energy meters that use resistance capacitance voltage reduction power supplies. At the same time, it can serve as a power supply circuit for the electricity meter.
