The SMD Varistor (SMD MOV) is a type of varistor. It is made using a zinc oxide nonlinear resistor element as the core, and it serves as an electrical surge protection device. The zinc oxide nonlinear resistor element is a compound semiconductor material made primarily of zinc oxide (ZnO) with various trace elements added, produced using ceramic processing technology. Its fundamental characteristic is the nonlinear relationship between current and voltage. When the voltage applied across it is below a certain threshold, known as the "clamping voltage," its resistance is very high, in the megaohm range. However, when the voltage exceeds the clamping voltage, the resistance decreases rapidly, and it can drop to the ohm or milliohm level.
By utilizing the nonlinear characteristics of varistors, when an overvoltage occurs across the varistor, it can clamp the voltage to a relatively fixed level, thereby protecting the downstream circuits. The main parameters of the varistor include clamping voltage, current capacity, junction capacitance, and response time.

Electromagnetic compatibility
When the applied voltage rises to the clamping voltage, the current through the varistor increases dramatically, and the surge voltage of the protected device is quickly reduced. This enables devices with varistors to meet surge noise immunity requirements.

Uses precious metal palladium/silver (Pd/Ag) internal electrodes, offering high reliability and long lifespan.
All raw materials are domestically sourced, with the entire process, from ceramic powder design to production, fully controlled in-house.
Clamping Voltage Range 3.3V ~ 680V, Max current capacity 6000A@3838
Super low internal resistance (milliohm range), low power consumption, minimal heat generation, and self-resetting after overvoltage protection. Offers up to 100,000 cycles of long-term protection.
Surge Capability
Varistors can handle larger surge currents.
Miniaturization
Varistors are smaller and less expensive.
ESD Tolerance
Varistors can withstand higher ESD currents due to their larger capacitance (~15-100pF).
Response Speed
TVS diodes respond at a picosecond (ps) level, while varistors have a response speed at the nanosecond (ns) level, which is sufficient for most circuits (under 1 GHz frequency).
Compared with traditional through-hole varistors, the SMD Varistor is smaller, has better high-temperature resistance, stronger moisture resistance, and does not require manual insertion. Installation efficiency is higher, and it offers the advantages of smaller size and higher surge capacity. In many fields, it has completely replaced traditional through-hole varistors.
