What is a Film Capacitor

 

A film capacitor is a type of capacitor that uses metal foil as the electrodes, which is combined with plastic films such as polyester, polypropylene, polystyrene, or polycarbonate. These materials are layered and rolled into a cylindrical structure. Depending on the type of plastic film used, they are classified as polyester capacitors (also known as Mylar capacitors), polypropylene capacitors (PP capacitors), polystyrene capacitors (PS capacitors), and polycarbonate capacitors.

Their structure is similar to paper dielectric capacitors, with dielectrics such as polyester or polystyrene. Polyester film capacitors have a high dielectric constant, small size, large capacity, and good stability, making them suitable for bypass capacitors. Polystyrene film capacitors have low dielectric loss, high insulation resistance, but a large temperature coefficient, making them suitable for high-frequency circuits.

• DC Film Capacitors: Used in circuits powered by DC sources, including general-purpose, power line interference suppression, pulse, and precision types.
• AC Film Capacitors: Used in circuits powered by AC sources, including types for motor starting and running, and power factor compensation.
