High-Energy Hybrid Tantalum Capacitor (abbreviated as Hybrid Ta) is a combination of tantalum electrolytic capacitor and supercapacitor. The "high-energy" refers to its high energy density, which falls between supercapacitors and electrolytic capacitors; the "hybrid" indicates that this capacitor integrates both supercapacitor and electrolytic capacitor technologies. Hybrid Ta combines the high capacitance of supercapacitors with the high voltage resistance of electrolytic capacitors.
The common cathode material for Hybrid Ta is ruthenium dioxide (RuO₂), and its charge-discharge process follows the Faradaic principle (where the amount of electrochemical reaction is proportional to the passed charge). Therefore, Hybrid Ta is precisely a composite of electrolytic capacitor and supercapacitor technologies. Its equivalent circuit is as follows:
Thanks to its high capacitance, high energy density, unlimited charge-discharge cycles, and long operational lifespan, Hybrid Ta is commonly used in power management systems, pulse current circuits, and power-fail protection circuits. In military applications, it is employed in UAVs, phased-array radars, and missile power modules.
