Polypropylene capacitors require a very delicate process to avoid thermal damage when soldering. Here are some key points you should notice when you solder the board.
Pre-Heat
Ensure that the board surface temperature stays below 110°C. Pre-heat exposure should be limited to 1 minute.
Wave Soldering
Max temperature is 260°C with a maximum exposure time of 4 seconds.
Post-Soldering
Allow sufficient time for the capacitor surface temperature to drop to ambient (25°C) if a secondary soldering process is needed.
UF Capacitors X2 Safety Capacitor Tray Packing
Iron/Tip Selection
Use an appropriately sized tip—large enough for the job but not too large to avoid damaging the capacitor.
Heat Sinks
Use heat sinks to protect the capacitor’s body during hand soldering.
Adhesive Curing
Ensure the adhesive temperature does not exceed the safe operating temperature of the capacitor.
Physical Contact
Avoid direct contact between the capacitor and other components or the PCB during soldering.
Molten Solder
Solder should not come into contact with the capacitor body.
Cleaning
If using aqueous cleaning, ensure the capacitor has a “Mod A” moisture-resistant construction and adequate cooling time after wave soldering.
