What is the difference between Supercapacitor and Capacitor

2024-06-19

What is Supercapacitor or capacitor?

Capacitors and supercapacitors are both devices used to store electrical energy, but they differ significantly in their construction, energy storage mechanisms, and applications.

Core differences between capacitors and supercapacitors

Energy Storage Mechanism

Energy Storage Mechanism is one of the major differences between supercapacitors and capacitors. Capacitors Store energy by accumulating electric charge between two conductive plates (typically made of metal) separated by an insulating material (dielectric). They store energy electrostatically, with the amount of stored energy proportional to the square of the voltage applied and the capacitance (C) of the capacitor (E = 0.5 * C * V^2).

Supercapacitors (Electric Double-Layer Capacitors, EDLCs): Store energy electrochemically at the interface between an electrode and an electrolyte. They rely on the formation of an electric double layer (EDL) at the electrode-electrolyte interface to store charge, which enables them to achieve much higher capacitance compared to traditional capacitors.

Capacitance

Capacitance is another difference between supercapacitors and capacitors.

Capacitors typically have capacitance values ranging from picofarads (pF) to millifarads (mF). They are used for short-term energy storage, filtering, and power conditioning in electronic circuits.

Supercapacitors have much higher capacitance values, typically ranging from tens of farads (F) to several thousand farads. This high capacitance allows them to store much larger amounts of electrical energy compared to capacitors, albeit at lower voltage ratings.

Energy Density:

Capacitors have relatively low energy density (energy stored per unit volume or mass), which limits their use for high-energy applications. While supercapacitors have higher energy density compared to traditional capacitors but lower compared to batteries. They bridge the gap between conventional capacitors and batteries in terms of energy storage capacity.

Charge and Discharge Characteristics

Capacitors can charge and discharge quickly, making them suitable for applications requiring rapid energy transfer, such as in electronics for smoothing power supply voltages.

Supercapacitors can also charge and discharge rapidly, but their energy density allows them to store more energy per unit volume or mass compared to capacitors, making them suitable for applications requiring higher energy storage.

Applications

Commonly capacitors are used in electronic circuits for energy storage, coupling, decoupling, filtering, and timing applications. But supercapacitors find applications in energy harvesting, regenerative braking systems, power backup systems, and other applications requiring rapid energy storage and release, where batteries may be too slow or capacitors too low in capacity.
